Crowded Kindness

September 20, 2010

Seek to cultivate a buoyant, joyous sense of the crowded kindnesses of God
in your daily life. -Alexander Maclaren

We’re soon coming up on one year since Josh became unemployed. We were unemployed for three months. During that time, I learned many lessons: peace, contentment, how to cling to God. I also learned gratefulness. And I think gratefulness has been a resounding theme in my life over the past year. I took much less for granted after Josh was once again employed. Not that I still don’t battle discontentment and materialism at times, I do!

This fall the women’s Bible study at my church is reading Choosing Gratitude: Your Journey to Joy. I’m very excited to continue this journey of gratitude and delve into discovering how to be more thankful each day of my life. I know it could truly be life changing.

And one way I’m going to practice gratitude is by joining Ann’s Gratitude Community. Every Monday (or most Mondays) I’ll be posting what I’m grateful for from the past week. Simple things, big things:

1. My new baby girl who will be a month old tomorrow!

2. My boys adjusting well to her arrival.

3. For many, many meals made and delivered to me by friends and neighbors over the past month.

4. For our “new” Honda Pilot that is enough room for all of us plus some.

5. For this glorious weather!

6. The wonderful ladies of all ages and walks of life I get to learn from this week at my church’s Bible study. We’re all learning to be grateful together.

7. Making donuts and memories with my mom.

8. Daily on-the-way-home phone chats with Josh.

9. Lady Gray tea on chilly evenings.

10. The ultimate reason for gratitude: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” Jer. 31:3b

I love those on the way home chats with my Josh, too. Frequently I’ll discover that he’s been home for 10 minutes or more, but stayed in the car so we could continue talking. 🙂

That is a great book. I read it last year leading up to Thanksgiving. It was so good. Even in trial and hardship we have so much to be grateful for…….so glad that it isn’t all about this life but the one to come.

If you remember I started a Gratitude Journal , two years ago? I think. Anyway so glad I did and continue on with it. It certainly has made a difference in me. Hope on occasion you see the work in me:) Your family is so gratiful for you, Josh, Duncan, Owen and now Sophia. Also the opportunity to serve you with joy of occasional help and time with you all. Love, your mama
