Valentine’s Day has been one of my favorite holidays since I was a child. My mom created many wonderful memories around the day. Yesterday, I took the boys to her house and we made sugar cookies and decorated them. The first batch got sprinkled, the second a coating of Royal Icing. A tasty trick with sugar cookies is to zest some lemon peel into your dough. That makes them so divine. Then make this icing for a sweet treat. From my heart to yours. 🙂

Royal Icing

1 egg white
1 C. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla, almond extract, or in this case, lemon juice
Pinch of cream of tarter
2 drops glycerin (makes icing shiny, optional)
Food coloring (optional)

Combine and beat all ingredients until icing holds shape in sharp peaks when beater is lifted. Add a few drops of water if ciing is too think; more sugar if it is too thin. Stir in food coloring if you want. Spread or pipe using pastry bag. The icing will harden, then store in an airtight container.

Would love to have the sugar cookie recipe, too. If it doesn’t work for me, I will never ever attempt sugar cookies again. Nothing has worked yet, so I’m thinking it’s me, but I’m always willing to give things one.more.try.

They look yummy- but I’ve always read that those silver ball thingies are “for decoration only”. Some of them have mercury. Not to rain on the parade…the cookies are lovely.
