Hot Chocolate Mix

October 25, 2008

For years I always loved Hershey’s Syrup mixed with hot milk for hot chocolate. Topped with marshmellows or with a peppermint stick, it was fabulous. I didn’t care for dry mixes at all and please, no water!

However, a few years ago my mom gave me a jar of French Vanilla Hot Cocoa Mix that she’d made for me. I loved it! And I made a ton for gifts last Christmas. It’s makes a perfect gift when put in a canning jar with a pretty label and placed along with mugs, homemade marshmellows, sugar/cinnamon popcorn, and a gift certificate to Blockbuster. I even found a sugar free version to make my diabetic uncle!

So today I whipped myself up a big batch for the upcoming months. I think I’m going to go make some and curl up on the couch and watch a movie. You can too. Here’s the recipe:

French Vanilla Hot Cocoa Mix

2 1/2 Cup Dry Milk Powder

1 1/4 C. Powdered Sugar

1/2 Cup Cocoa

1/2 Cup Vanilla Creamer (dry) I used Coffee-Mate Sugar Free, since there’s already powdered sugar in it.

Mix and add 1/3 cup to your mug and stir in hot milk.

You brought back fond memories…I always used to make hot chocolate with Hershey’s syrup and milk when I was a kid! I’ll have to try this one. Hot chocolate is one of winter’s few redeeming qualities, as far as I’m concerned.

You know, this was the first time making it sugar free and I like it better with the regular creamer. It’s not a big difference, but it changed the taste. Just a FYI!

Funny that you just posted this! I was just looking online for a good homemade cocoa recipe and have one to try.

It’s got many of the same ingredients, I just need to pare it down to a smaller quantity to try first. (powdered sugar, cocoa, creamer and cinnamon) I bought hazelnut creamer and am anxious to see how it complements the cinnamon. YUM!!!

Okay~ I’ve become a total snob with Hot Chocolate ever since Bill’s mom made some for me from scratch about a year ago. Now I can’t go near the packet mixes, as they just aren’t the same. I’ve even started making my own Hot Cocoa from scratch…my favorite is with Dark Chocolate Cocoa, and I melt in Dark Chocolate Squares….

This recipe looks awesome; I can’t wait to try it, as I never thought of using dried Milk???? I looked at the recipe, and was like, “They make dried Milk????” (Yeah, give me a break…I’m just getting into this cooking thing….)

I decided to use this recipe for Christmas gifts this year and added a TBS of cinnamon and a 1/4 tsp. of nutmeg for a little holiday flair. So yummy! Thanks for sharing!

I made this for the first time tonight. So far Ben, Dan B, Joel, and I have indulged. It’s a big hit! I think I’ve just found an easy, delicious gift that’s sure to please.
