Walking

October 20, 2007

Something about walking clears, refocuses, and refreshes my mind. How many times I’ve begun a walk with my spirit downcast, and arrived home invigorated.

Today the sun is golden and the wind makes the leaves above my head shake on the arms of the trees, yet it is still below. Fallen leaves drift into piles like colorful snow along the side of the road. The earth holds a spicy, slightly moldy smell of leaves beginning to decompose.I hear the rhythm of the stroller as it crunches leaves and acorns. The cheery chirping of birds has ended with the summer and the eerie hum of autumn insects speak to me of stillness and anticipation. The earth seems to be waiting for something.

My boys lift their eyes in wonder, staring into the leafy sky. I see the world with new eyes too.
