Press On
I’ve been going through a spiritually dry spell recently. I’ve been reading Acts and it’s been good, but it’s just seemed like a story, with very little I’ve felt like I could apply to my daily life.
Then today, I started a new devotional, A 31-Day Experience: The Pursuit of God by A. W. Tozer (edited into a daily devotional). The first scripture and chapter encouraged me to continue to “press on” in my times with the Lord, knowing that spiritual refreshment will come:
“Let us acknowledge the LORD;
let us press on to acknowledge him.
As surely as the sun rises,
he will appear;
he will come to us like the winter rains,
like the spring rains that water the earth.” – Hosea 6:3 (emphasis mine)
“We have almost forgotten that God is a person and, as such, can be cultivated as any person can. It is inherent in personality to be able to know other personalities, but full knowledge of one personality by another cannot be achieved in one encouter. It is only after long and loving mental intercourse that the full possibilities of both can be explored.” A. W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God
How true! Today I’ve been exhorted to press on in faith through the discipline of pursuing God, and He’s already encouraged me by His word.

What a great post and so true. I never thought of it that way before. I have experienced what you are describing at times. In fact most of last year was that way for me and then this year I just sit down and have been encouraged almost daily. I am sure God knows to when he needs to develop perserverance in us and when he needs to be there encouraging each step.
This looks like a good devotional. I might get it too.

Thanks too from me Danielle. I needed to hear this on this Monday morning. Keeping my eye on the prize, Christ, it is really hard at times and it seems so obvious that we would seek his counsel, spend time with him, yet we choose to solve our issues on our own.

I got the book at some Christian bookstore a long time ago. I first read it when I was in high school or college. Browsing my bookshelf, I found it again and decided to redo the study. I remember it as being very good, but I’ve only done one chapter thus far. There’s usually only one or two verses highlighted, so sometimes I read the whole chapter the verse comes from for context.

YOu’re not the only experiencng spiritual dryness right now. In fact, I am one of them. Yet this time I have a different perspective. I feel the Lord has really given me a gardening perspective that was prompted by a comment Suzanne left for me about cutting back her hydrangea. I posted about it. I may be dry but I have such hope for spring to return. It always has!
